The 09/28/16 update to my computer (an HP Envy 700-214, 64-bit, 2.5 years old) was to Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.222). It left me basically without a printer (an HP officejet Pro L77780 All-in-One, about 6 years old). That update affected some 35 programs (per “Programs and Features” listing), including some HP programs, but apparently not Paint.net, which I use for scanning pictures to embed in other programs. Long story short, I’ve resurrected the printer (using HP’s Print Doctor) for everything except that scanning process using Paint.net. Looking for answers on the Paint.net query page, I found “File|Acquire submenu is greyed out; WIA installed”, which fits my case. Unfortunately, that thread is very old and is of no use. I found another reference to check that the following programs were running in “auto” mode: HP Solution Center 14.0; HP Imaging Device Functions 14.0; and HP Customer Participation Programs 14.0 – they are and were all updated on 09/28/16.
I’ve tried running the compete installation package for this printer, hoping it would find and correct any errors that might have been written to the registry, but that didn’t work. (HP site: “OJ_AIO_L7X00_Full_Win_WW_140_408-5.exe”). In addition, the HP Support Assistant can see my A-I-O only as a fax, and not as a printer, which is pretty disappointing.
I know one remedy is to go back to a previous restore point, but really don’t want to do that; I’d rather stay up to date with all improvements to the Win10 OS.
Do you think it would help to remove my printer/scanner/fax entirely from my computer and reinstall the complete setup package again? OR is there something simple I’m missing here…
